Discussion:
Lots of questions about Frost and Thaw

Hi, I'm new to Freenet and I have several questions about Frost and Thaw...

First, I've read the info about these programs at the link below:

http://freenetproject.org/documentation.html

When I downloaded Thaw from
http://downloads.freenetproject.org/alpha/Thaw, I notice the file dates
are in 2008. Is there a newer version?

The page about Frost states it should be included in the install but
it's not (I have version 0.7). Where do I get it?

Do I even need Frost? On the Thaw wiki page
(http://wiki.freenetproject.org/Thaw) it states Thaw supports Frost
messaging via a plugin. Is this a current feature or something that will
be added in the future? If it's current, how do I use it?

Thanks!
Walter

If you want a forum on freenet, then sure, it is one of at least three
different forum systems. It's a standalone Java program (that operates
over your freenet node in the background.) FMS is a similar, newer and
better standalone program, written in C. Freetalk is an even newer
system, written as a Java plugin to your node, and installed/accessed
via your node's control panels (normally) -- although I hear it (still)
has performance issues.

Naturally, none of these systems talk to each other. We can hack up
sophisticated mathematical elliptical curve ciphers and complex routing
algorithms for ad-hoc network topologies, but creating compatible
protocols is simply beyond us.

Thanks Denis but I'm just looking for ways to access Frost message
boards. I have found a freesite for frost that appears to have a version
of Frost that's newer than the one on freenetproject.org. I'll try that
one out but I'm still curious if there is a plugin for Thaw that will
access Frost message boards.

Even if there isn't such a plugin, I think I still need Thaw for file
sharing and I have no idea where to get a recent version. As I mentioned
in my previous message, the one available for download at
freenetproject.org is at least 3 years out of date. Is there a freesite
for Thaw with a more recent version or where else do I go?

Thanks,
Walter

That's fair enough. Although, you should be aware that the other two
newer systems were built specifically because Frost can be trivially
DOS-ed and rendered unusable. (They use "webs of trust", instead of
allowing anybody/anything to post.)

Thaw's Frost Messanging System plugin was never finished, and i think today it's
abandonware. Three-year-old version sounds about right.

Yup, best ditch Thaw.

If only for being abandonware, it should be deprecated clearly at
freenetproject.org and the 'official' freesites in my opinion.
